When Epic Dreams Come True - 2013 Birthday Trip

Thursday, November 28, 2013

* This article was written in September.

Traveling for my birthday is my tradition. Before I start writing about the trip, I need a moment to share. Santorini has been my ultimate DREAM destination when I was younger. I didn’t speak much about it because I didn't want to say it out loud. I didn’t want people to know about it because I didn't want to have this thing hanging over my head - something I never did.

Like in 2000 my head was up in the clouds and I randomly talked about wanting to live in Australia that year to accomplish (at that time) my life goals - attend the Olympics, watch a Tennis Grand Slam match (there's the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbeldon and the US Open) and catch an F1 race to see Michael Schumacher. All of those events were happening in Australia that year. My relatives kept asking me about that plan but I never made an effort to make it happen so it never did.

My dreams have changed but in 2009, I crossed one of them from my list amazingly!

Back to Santorini. Before you freak about the immensity of the trip (the meaning and the expenses), this has been 3 years in the making. This trip was supposed to happen in 2010 but I didn’t save enough for it. I spent 2 years saving for the trip but in 2011 and 2012 challenges occurred postponing the trip once more.

This year, it's happening. I am in Santorini writing this post about to celebrate Tin's birthday and mine - we're a day apart.

Pardon my long rambling; this whole experience is overwhelming in a fantastic way. Santorini for me is like growing up wanting to be a rock star. It’s a big enough dream that not everyone is fortunate to achieve.

More than seeing the place, I am washed over by the thought of fulfilling what I thought was an unachievable dream.

You can quote me on this - dreams happen with determination and hard work, not just wishing for it.

Wwwaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!!! I want to cry.

What happens when your dreams come true? You bathe in the moment then craft up a new one. May you continue to dream and move towards it.

P.S. My complete itinerary is posted here.
