A Light Dinner at Wild Ginger Powerplant

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

I spent another day with Berenice walking and checking out bazaars featuring excellent Filipino brands, innovation and craftsmanship. By the time dinner came, we wanted to rest our tired feed and have something light – enter Wild Ginger.

Wild Ginger boasts of an Asian menu having popular dishes from each country. For my light dinner, I went Indian while Berenice chose Vietnamese and vegetarian.

Chicken Samosas (P46)
Chicken curry puffs
Their Chicken Samoa tasted like what you would expect a samosa to taste like without the oiliness. The heart it packed was just enough for me to enjoy, I don’t have a high tolerance for spicy food. Savory and spicy, just the way I like my samosa.

Roti Prata with Curry Dipping Sauce (P120)
Indian flaky bread; a popular house specialty
I found the roti rather thick but despite that, this dish screams true Indian food. All the well loved Indian spices are present in this dish dancing on your palette. My nose started to get the colds because of the spiciness of dish but it was too good I couldn’t resist.

Vietnamese Fresh Spring Rolls (P135)
Clean flavours of fresh shrimp, vegetables and vermicelli
I don’t love eating vegetables but after a trip to Vietnam, their Fresh Spring Rolls have become part of my must eats. Unfortunately Wild Ginger’s version was below my expectations. It lacked the freshness and flavor I usually adore in a batch of Fresh Spring Rolls. The vermicelli used was a bit rubbery too.

Roasted Eggplant Salad (P85)
Smashed smoky eggplant, vinegar and garlic
At a glance, the Roasted Eggplant Salad looks bland but it had the right blend of smoky and spicy. It really felt liked someone puffed a ball of smoke in your mouth in a good way. I loved the smoky taste of the garlic and pepper combined with the sweetness of the tomato. I don’t normally pick an eggplant dish but this is one I enjoyed immensely.

With the few appetizers we tried, we were fairly satisfied. Wild Ginger gets a good rating in my book for its authentic versions of the regional dishes. I will return to have a proper meal next time; I hope their main courses are as pleasing as their appetizers.
