Café Publico Hits the Sweet Spot

Monday, January 21, 2013

It’s a kid at heart’s (ok fine, in all honesty it’s a real kid’s) dream come true. I’ve found another ice cream spot I am deliriously in love with. The café makes me as giddy as how I was at Scoop of Art in Singapore.

Café Publico feels like a cup of warm hot chocolate on a rainy day – soothing. You will feel at ease in the midst of the homey ambiance filled with idiosyncratic trinkets the owner accumulated through the years. The knick knacks range from toys you played with as a kid to travel mementos.

An assortment of games is available for patrons. Big ass chess anyone?

Besides luscious gelato, milkshakes, sundaes and other sweet concoctions, Café Publico has a menu with “real food”. I call proper food “real food”.  They have some appetizers, sandwiches and pasta you can dig into.

Spinach & Cheese (P280)
This is a common combination for dips. I can’t say it’s the best I’ve ever tasted but it was good enough to recommend to others.

Meatballs and Cheese Sloppy Sandwich (P285)

Pesto and Cream Spaghetti (P250)
You know any cream based pasta is deadly; it goes to your hips right away. This pesto and cream pasta is worth the calorie you’ll get with its flavorful combination.

Sausage and Spinach Spaghetti Arrabiata (P290)
Looks can be deceiving, the plate may look small but you’ll feel full if you’re a girl like me. The simple dish is reminiscent of your mom’s cooking.

Now, the main attraction. I was drawn to Café Publico because of their gelato. When I saw their menu, I was salivating over the drink and dessert options without seeing the gelato bar yet.

Gelato (P105 – small, P165 – medium, P210 – large)
So many flavors, so little tummy space.

Gelato Cookie Sandwich (P195)
Your choice of gelato on their walnut chocolate chip cookies
Since I was feeling full, Danix and I split the cookie sandwich and we chose cinnamon & pecan. The cookie was tough making it challenging to eat. The gelato was excellent and we would have been happy getting just gelato.

Handcrafted Salted Caramel Hot Cocoa (P145)
Topped with whipped cream and chocolate chips
Insatiably delicious! I love the sweet and salty combination and this hot cocoa is such.  Think of your favorite fudgy cookie, melt it and slurp away. That’s exactly how this cup of goodness tastes like.

I liked the food here but I was too full already! I wanted to attack the other drinks and dessert but my tummy waved the white flag. I will make another trip here with the goal of a sugar rush. Haha The gelato is really the star of the café.  I have so many flavors to try so I really have to come back!

The café feels like a good hug on a bad day, good vibes all the way. If you’re in need of a perk me up or just in a chipper mood wanting to sustain the positivity, a trip to Café Publico is just what the doctor ordered. Let’s make it simpler, if you want good ice cream this is the spot in San Juan.
