4 Things you need to know when visiting Brutalist building Atrium in Makati
Thursday, August 01, 2024I got interested in Brutalist Architecture when I chanced upon the Brutalist Pilipinas Page last year. It took some time but my friends and I were finally able to drop by the Atrium along Makati Avenue. Honestly did not know something like this existed so was pretty surprised it was under our noses all along.
The Atrium is a perfect example of brutalist architecture. It is stark, blocky geometric, and my god all these beautiful lines. Old gems like this are easily demolished here in Manila so drop by and appreciate whilst you can. The building is actually operational and houses offices, studios, food carts, and even a lotto kiosk. Lol
Here are 4 things you need to know before going there.
1. Best time to go is in the afternoon
One of the tenants mentioned that the building interiors soak in gorgeous sunlight in the afternoon. We actually went on a relatively sunny Saturday and unfortunately, we weren’t able to witness it. We only had a smidge of sunlight. It actually makes me want to come back to witness a better sun show because I know it will be worth it.
2. It is hot and sticky
The common areas do not have AC. As we made our way exploring each floor, we were getting sweatier and sweatier. We only discovered the elevator when we were on the third floor already.
3. You are not allowed to visit the higher floors
The top floor had a beautiful sight line and we wanted to see it. A security guard kindly told us that guests were only allowed in floors that had tenants for safety concerns. The policy is understandable and we apologized and made our way back down.
4. There is a quaint coffee shop inside with AC
Yes, AC is a good come on but Convenience Coffeehouse also serves good quality coffee. I tried the Sweet White (P160) and it was 12 oz and only had 1 shot of espresso. It was not watered down and had good body. It had the right balance of coffee and sweetness – just the way I like it.
Exploring my own city and discovering things is what truly excites me. Any other suggestions of where to go next?
