How to renew your Philippine Passport at DFA NCR-East (SM Megamall)

Saturday, June 14, 2014

When I renewed my passport in 2009, I went all the way to the main office of the DFA. I also used the service of Teleserv to make sure I got the date I wanted. At that time, Teleserv was third party company that assisted in passport renewal and had additional charges.

Fast forward to 2014 and I am happy to say that times have changed. It is much easier to renew your passport now because the DFA has several satellite offices scattered in Metro Manila. Their processes caught up with technology and setting an appointment can be done easily.

Please remember that this article is about the PASSPORT RENEWAL process only. For NEW PASSPORT APPLICATIONS, please visit the DFA website.

How to set an appointment:
1. You can set your appointment via phone (02-7371000) or online. Pick the location for your appointment here.
2. If you’re doing it over the phone, please follow the instructions of the customer service agent. If you’re doing it online, you will be directed to a page of reminders.
3. After the reminders, you will be asked to input your information.
4. Next, you will see the location’s calendar where you can click on the dates to check appointment availability.
5. After you verify your information, expect an email from the DFA with your application form.
6. Print your application form and make sure you have all the requirements. MAKE SURE to bring the complete requirements because the DFA won’t process incomplete requirements.

What to expect during your appointment:
1. I’m surprised that they didn’t have any clothing requirements. I went in a collared blouse like old passport and visa photos but other people went in casual clothes.
2. The requirements list is long but when I applied, the DFA officer only got (1) the photocopy of my passport pages and (2) photocopy of a valid ID.
3. My appointment was on a Monday afternoon and I was surprised that verification, processing and payment took all of 5 minutes.
4. The encoding part took the longest; I was in line for an hour and 16 minutes. Bring something with you to keep you company while in line.
5. You will be asked to affix your signature via a tablet. My experience was rather embarrassing because it took me at least 8 tries to get it right. I am thankful to the officer assigned to me who was patient.
6. After encoding, you will be given instructions for pick up/delivery.
7. For applicants who opt to pick up their passports, make sure to call 02-5703230 to 31 before heading to the DFA to confirm that your passport is ready. Pick up was a breeze and took less than 10 minutes.

Again, my experience is based on PASSPORT RENEWAL in DFA NCR EAST (SM Megamall). I don’t know if the process applies for all the offices but theoretically, it should since the process should be streamlined.

I can't wait to use of the pages of my new passport!
