How To Help #YolandaPH victims whether you’re based inside or outside the Philippines

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

There are several ways to help the victims. I applaud the creative efforts of people to make helping easier and how people have extended their help in their own skill set. Here’s how you can help.

By Volunteering
Several government organizations, schools, NGOs and private groups have relief efforts in play right now. Take your pick, you’ll find an group that is near you – you don’t have any excuses anymore.
- DSWD National Resource Operations Center
Chapel Road, Pasay City (near NAIA Terminal 2, across Nayong Pilipino)
- Gawad Kalinga
Gymnasium of the Department of Agrarian Reform Head Office (Quezon City Circle)
     Contact Person> Joseph Nolasco (09178363057)
- GMA Kapuso Foundation
- Philippine Red Cross (sign up to volunteer)

By Shopping and Eating

Sometimes, you feel like you don’t know how to help. Maybe you can’t volunteer or can’t donate but there are companies and organizations that use their skill set to enable you to help. I am thankful for these creative individuals who give us another way of helping.

Aid Couture
Shop for pre-loved clothes and be styled on the spot as well.

Mini Coolectibles
This quirky shop is donating its sales to the victims. I’ve featured their items in Food Magazine before so you know you’re bound to see something you’ll like.

Dine for a Cause
Check out Spot’s list for the dates and restaurants donating their sales for the victims.

By Donating Relief Goods
Donating goods is not just about giving but to donate what is needed. For example, it is wonderful your company would like to donate construction materials to rebuild the places hit by the typhoon but those materials aren’t needed just yet. Perhaps in a few more weeks or months?

When I was sifting through donated clothes when I volunteered, some of them were ridiculous – ridiculously unusable. When donating old clothes, I only have one thing in mind “Would I like to receive this?”. If your answer is no, please don’t donate those clothes anymore.

Another thing about donating food and other items – please do not sort them and bring “gift packs”. The effort is admirable but one it arrives in the center, volunteers need to resort that once again. Relief centers have their own list of what to pack in a “relief goods” bag. Remember, the bags need to contain the same thing thus the specific packing list.
