Not your ordinary carinderia – Kanto Freestyle Breakfast

Wednesday, October 03, 2012

My love affair with breakfast food continues! After our bike trip in Ortigas, we planned to look for Kanto Freestyle Breakfast. I read a lot of good reviews about the spot and would see a lot of glorious food photos but not much of the place. I know as much as this - it’s open air, but that’s it. I had one question that was never answered by the links I visited: is it really a carinderia?
Yes.

It’s not like any carinderia I’ve been to! What makes it different? One word, gourmet. It’s not Miele Guide gourmet but its carinderia gourmet. I’ve never seen carinderia food presented this way.

Kanto Freestyle Breakfast is a 24 hour eatery tucked in Mandaluyong. There is no ambiance, it is open air and has a few tables. We were there for lunch and luckily we were the only customers. It was a hot but windy day making the heat bearable.

Iced Coffee (P35)
They use the normal 3 in 1 coffee and added ice. Kanto lacks a wide range of drinks and during our visit they only had softdrinks or coffee.

Mixed Berry Pancakes (P90)
Seasonal berries, butter, maple syrup
The pancakes were fluffy-la-fagus good! If Kanto was walking distance from my house, I would pick Kanto over Pancake House hands down.

Batangas Tapa (P90)
Garlic rice, 2 eggs free style, pesto tomato
All four of us were craving for tapa! I wanted a chance to taste the other dishes so I opted for something else. Danix, Tre and Noel gave in and all ordered tapa. Kanto’s version can easily rival Tapa King’s. The pesto tomato has to be commended, it was a good partner to the viands and tasted the country side.

Crispy Pork Belly (P90)
Garlic rice, sauce, pesto tomato
I don’t normally like eating the taba (fat) part but their pork belly was too good that I downed the taba too! If you order the Freestyle Breakfast, their version of fast foods’ “meal”, you get unlimited garlic rice.

Fried Oreos (P40)
Normal fried oreos which was a good end to the meal.

We had a visitor during lunch with mesmerizing eyes. The kitten was actually blinking in the first photo. Adorable!!!

The cook said they get busy when the sun goes down. They also add more tables since they set-up on the street. If you’re in the Mandaluyong, San Juan or Makati area, you are in luck because they deliver! It is best to call to check if your address is covered by them. Minimum for delivery is 5 orders.

Do you expect to see good looking food like that in a carinderia for under P100? Yes some people will say that P90 for carideria food is expensive but I say for the quality and presentation of their dishes, it is affordable with a capital A. I wanted to demolish more items on the menu but I was gorged. Thus, I cannot wait to go back!

  2. We have experienced eating out at their branch in Kapitolyo, Pasig and SERVICE was so BAD in terms of customer service and the waiting/service time of the delivery of their food in your table.
