24 hour comfort food with Borough

Friday, January 14, 2011

Borough claims to replicate a typical New York joint, I can’t vouch for that since I’ve never been to the Big Apple. I can however vouch for its food. Though defined as upscale, the restaurant’s atmosphere is cozy and not at all intimidating.

Their menu is interesting and immediately excited me.

Cubano Corn (P100)
Corn on the Cob. Covered in Cayene Pepper, Parmesan Cheese and loads of Butter.
It’s a very simple appetizer but for a corn addict like me, no corn is simple enough. It was delicious and really tasted, Cuban! The sweetness of the corn with the spicy kick of the cayenne pepper was a good combination.

Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup (P240)
Grilled Cheese in Homemade Brioche Bread. Served with creamy Tomato Soup.
It didn’t take me long to decide I HAD TO HAVE THIS. It’s considered an appetizer but it was one of our entrees. The Grilled Cheese looks more like French Toast but tastes every morsel like Grilled Cheese. Dip the sandwich in the soup and it is heavenly!

Eggplant Parmegiana (P380)
Panako Crusted Fried Eggplant covered in Mozzarella and sprinkled with Parmesan. Served with Buttered Spaghetti.
I could taste the quality of the ingredients used in this dish, it was delicious but my vote for the best Eggplant Parmegiana still goes to Mactan Shangri-la.

Brooklyn Omelette (P260)
3-egg omelette. Filled with Fresh Herbs, Sun Dried Tomatoes and Cream Cheese. Served with “Home Fries”.
On my second visit, we got the omelette and the pita pocket. Everything was fresh and scrumptious but it was over shadowed by the pita pocket.

Cheese Injected Portobello Pita Pocket (P230)
Portobello Mushroom oozing with Monterey Jack in a Pita Pocket.
We declared that this is one of the things we wouldn’t mind ordering over and over again at Borough. It gave me a new appreciation for portobello mushroom and made me google recipes right after. The mushroom tasted exactly like meat making it a healthier option. We just really fell for this creation.

The Serendipity (P200)
Imagine turning your favorite chocnut bar turned into a shake, then add alcohol to that - meet the Serendipity. This is my favorite drink in the world, seriously! I keep finding myself inside Borough for this. They also offer 50% on drinks from 6-8 PM on weekdays making me drink more of the Serendipity. It is looooove!

With everything I tasted, the dishes consistently had great flavor profiles. You can taste the individual ingredients initially then the fusion of these ingredients creates a fabulously seasoned and put together dish. My favorites would have to be the Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup as well as the Cheese Injected Portobello Pita Pocket.

Expect to spend around P400 per head though it may seem steep, it’s worth it. On my 2 visits, we were extremely satisfied. They not only have free wi-fi, they’re freakin open for 24 hours! Have your Borough fill for breakfast, lunch, dinner, after gimiks or whenever you want.
Another uniquely Ortigas establishment that’s been making me want to go back for more. Borough is truly the epitome of comfort food.
