5 Anti-stress Drinks

Wednesday, October 20, 2010

I came across an article from the Manila Bulletin recently. The information shared was not life altering but I deemed it appropriate to share. The DOH lists 5 drinks that can help mellow the toxicity of work. They also happen to be fantastic partners during the cold weather.

1. Milk
“A glass of milk contains tryptophan, which as it is metabolized is converted to mood-boosting serotonin. Plus its calcium, magnesium, and potassium content, it may help keep blood pressure down.”
Even as a child, I never enjoyed drinking plain milk; it had to be flavoured, with sugar or accompanied by cookies. Dunked with Oreos anyone? It’s an anti-stress drink not a weight loss drink. Haha

2. Hot Cocoa
“Drinking hot cocoa raise the body temperature – a feeling associated with comfort, so it triggers a similar response in human brains.”
Chocolate and cocoa becomes evil when you take too much of it. Haha I have fond memories with Swiss Miss and on special days, Antonio Pueo though not stress related. Haha

3. Black Tea
“Black tea instead of coffee lowers the stress hormone cortisol after a stressful event.”

4. Green Tea
“Drinking green tea – packed with theanine, increases the brain’s output of relaxation-inducing alpha waves and reduces the output of tension-making beta waves.”
Does it come with age? I enjoyed drinking tea when I hit my 20s.

5. Cold Water
“A glass of cold water and then going for a walk outside the office gets your blood moving and the air invigorates by stimulating the endorphins that de-stress you, health experts said.”
When I hit college, I went “wild”. Goodbye Coleman, Hello softdrinks and juices everyday! I forgot to appreciate water. When I started working, I trained myself to drink more water. Now, it’s my go to drink. I loooove water! I always have a cold glass by my side when I’m using the computer.

What helps you de-stress?
